Rafe had no idea what he was going to do with Demi, but he wasn’t letting all those women have her. He wanted her talking with him—about sensuality, and doing something with what she had learned. His current fragile state wasn’t that easy to bear. “You’ve been running and fetching for those women for a day and a half. You look tired.”

“Well! Thank you very much. You could return to acquiring things for Palladin, Inc. and leave me alone.”

“I am acquiring what I want and damned soon.” Rafe held the birch branch away from Demi’s head as the horse passed by it.

“You can’t have the castle. You can’t just come m, flop me over your shoulder and take me away from my business. You broke down my door...tore the hinges from the frame and...you broke down my door.” Her voice rose indignantly, and chipmunks scurried from the path of his horse.

“I’m a cad,” he muttered. “I miss you,” he added, resenting the truthful statement, and gathered her closer to him.

“Oh, I see.” Demi placed her hand over his on her stomach. She looked down at his fingers, splayed open and possessive— not at all like Thomas’s fingers-together touch...not that Thomas ever held her so closely, usually just for photos. Much like he’d hold a book. “I know you’re fighting your past, Rafe. It’s easy to see that something is bothering you. Of course, I can spare a few hours for you.”

“Gee, thanks.”

Despite his frustration, Rafe settled back to enjoy riding through the April sunlight with Demi in his grasp. The horse trail wound through the firs and pines and Demi pointed to Tallchief Mountain. “I still don’t see how she could have become intimate with a man on her first meeting. Oh, I know Elizabeth had to save their lives, but still how did she know how to make him...you know—”

Rafe forced himself not to groan. “Could we ignore Elizabeth’s athletic endeavors?”

“Well, I suppose.” Demi studied the bubbling creek, bordered by aspens, sumac and pine. “Where are we?”

“That’s one of the best fishing holes anywhere,” Rafe said, swinging down from behind her.

“Ah! You like to fish. You’ve apparently been under a strain. That is supposed to be good therapy.”

Rafe placed his hands on her waist to lift her down and knew exactly what therapy he needed.
